Our Hurricanes have been very busy in the music room this past month!
September, our focus was on the Blues and conversations that influenced these songs. We discussed and learn that the blues follow a 12 bar pattern and an AAB form (A lines have the same words, B line has an end rhyme.)
We also learned about the composer B.B. King and his influence, hardships and triumphs.
October, brings reviews in the elements of music. Our focus for the first two weeks will be on basic rhythmic patterns through instruments and body percussion. Later on this month, students will begin our unit on the Ukulele.
With our Composer of the month (COM), Students have been encouraged to go home and ask who their parents think the most famous Canadian musician is. We will poll the response in class.
In November, our focus shifted to learning a new instrument. We reviewed our basic rhythm patterns and added the Ukulele to it. We spend most of the month focusing on the parts of the instruments, the difference between the left and right hand in play and how to properly hold the instrument in playing and resting position. Our composer of the month study this month focused on The Piano Guys and how they have made Classical music cool. Needless to say, our little Hurricanes quickly became massive fans of these amazing music and had us guessing how they moved the piano to some very weird and wacky places. Who knew you could fly a Grand Piano by helicopter!
In December, we found ourselves in Orange so no singing or Christmas Concert. Our focus turned to some updated Christmas Carols through Composer of the Month and we played various Christmas songs with our Boom Whackers. We challenged ourselves to learn some of the music from The Nutcracker Suite and some songs we found very hard.
In January, our Composer of the Month was Walk of The Earth from Burlington, Ontario. We focused on making music with loops or loop pedals as well as using household items for instruments such as a can of soup, a box of KD, forks, spoons and more. Our focus also returned to our Ukulele instrument study and we started moveable chords of C, C7, and Am while strumming different patterns.
February, our Composer was Queen and we looked at all the wonderful changes Queen added to music history as well as their bravery as a band in 1970's when culture was very serious and going against the normal, was considered improper. Of course, due to online learning and complications, we turned our focus to rhythm studies and body percussion.
In March, we have returned to our instrument study and have started to introduce popular songs into our study. We have focused our attention on the use of technology while learning a new instrument, and specifically YouTube. We looked at what makes a good tutorial, "look fors", how to slow the speed down using the settings tool and how to start playing different rhythmic strumming patterns. Our composer of the month was the Irish band Danu. With this band, we looked at some common and uncommon instruments, as well as styles of jig, reels, hornpipes and more.
